Art and comfort in a modern setting
In order to understand Hotel Rugendas' unique style, you have to look towards the past. Art, hand in hand with the essence of travel and its elegant spirit, have been the hotel's core features since its inception.
The building that houses the hotel was built in 1996. The idea for the venture emerged from conversations among six friends - the current directors - who dreamed of creating of special hotel in the Santiago neighborhood of El Golf. The aspect that would galvanize their efforts and lend the establishment its distinct feel would be, of course, art.
The hotel's name comes from Juan Mauricio Rugendas, a German mannerist painter who lived in this country between 1834 and 1844. Rugendas used his brush to immortalize the hospitality and soulfulness of late 18th century Chile. Some of his highly emotive works are on display on the hotel walls. They are part of the cultural and artistic energy that contributes to the spirit of Hotel Rugendas.
The painter's globetrotting style and special aesthetic sensibility - both thematic hallmarks of the Rugendas Hotel experience - have been face with change over the years. In the modern age, it is of the utmost importance to continue this locally focused legacy, concerned with detail and the personal stamp of each city. For this reason, our hotel features examples of national and international art that offer diverse interpretations of local culture.
This emphasis on the warmth and oneness that characterizes the people of Chile has set the standard for every intrepid photographer who has walked the same ground as Rugendas. That adventurous eye, centered on the warmth of the Chilean people, is what Hotel Rugendas wants to communicate with its art.
